Don’t invite behaviors – identify needed social skills

Watch this video [1:08] to see why I think teaching social skills in your classroom is VITAL for academic success.

When I plan an ACADEMIC lesson, I also plan for behavior success by asking myself what SOCIAL skills my students will need.

Often the number of social skills needed is MUCH higher than the number of academic skills.

For example, when I want to deliver a lesson in a cooperative learning format, I have to be very aware of kids who don’t yet know how to work in a group.

I may decide I need to delay using cooperative groups until I teach students the social skills they will need to succeed academically is such a setting.
