How do I choose which behavior to target first?

Watch this video [1:31] to learn why the most impactful behavior is the one to target first.

I had a five-year-old kid who was running out of the classroom all the time. We were all chasing him around the building. It was a game for him.

We put a plan in place. It included having people who were up the hall whom we could call when he bolted. So, he came to learn that every time he went down the hall, someone would step out and say, “Joey, go back.”

It took us from September to December to get this kid to stay in his classroom.

So, now it’s December. He’s sitting there in a chair. But he refuses to sit on the carpet with the group. He refuses to do any of his little sheets. In fact, he hasn’t done a lick of work since he walked into kindergarten.

But he’s in the room now.

That was our goal.

One of the things that we really get tripped up by is we want it all right away. We have to realize we’ve got to hit the behavior that’s impacting the child the most to start with. We did that.
