If a student needs one-to-one tutoring, I will, whenever I can, do it OUTSIDE of the classroom. I simply have the kid meet me in the library.

In fact, with a high school student, I ALWAYS have them meet me someplace else. I do not go to their classroom and retrieve them.

They hate that.

A reading specialist tried repeatedly to retrieve a 10th grader who couldn’t read, and he refused to go with her. When we sat down with the 10th grader and did some problem solving, he said to me, “All right, I will go if I can meet her someplace else.”

After that, he never came to class—he went right to the library. They met together and they got the reading tutoring in.
