Classroom behavior: hand out your own consequences

Polly Bath: When there is a consequence to a child’s behavior, detention or whatever it might be, it should be held with the teacher or adult that it started with.
When the student is sent to the Principal or another administrator for their consequence, then they are being taught to behave for that person. But they aren’t being taught to behave for the teacher that they had the struggles with, because there is no connection back to the teacher.
It’s the same thing if we wait for Dad or Mom to hand out a consequence.
When we have someone else handle the consequences, then the child is never going to behave for you. They don’t need to, because they realize that you’re powerless. You’ve taught them that you’re powerless!
